Questions to Ask Yourself When Building a Home Pt 1

We’ve all heard the saying, practice makes perfect, but most of us do not build enough times to learn as we go. When building a dream home, we typically get one shot. That’s why we made a list of common questions that will make your homebuilding process easier.

What things do you like/dislike about your current house?

Do you love the convenience of the Jack and Jill bathroom for your kids? Or, do you hate listening to them argue about who gets to shower first? Make a list of what works and doesn’t work in your current home, so your new home works for you and not against you.

Do you plan to age in place?

Thinking down the line is smart when you’re selecting home plans. The idea to age in place involves designing a floor plan to avoid potential challenges as you age. Single-story floor plans, an open, spacious living space and curbless showers, are all design choices that will allow you to age gracefully in your home for as long as possible.

Where does your family spend most of their time?

Decide where your family tends to congregate in the house. If your family spends a lot of time in the kitchen, investing in an island with seating or an open floor plan might be a smart choice. Or maybe you are movie lovers, and the perfect media room is the top priority. Make this decision with the entire family in mind and your house will become a home.

Do you have space to grow?

Families are always evolving. Four-person families can quickly become five. Tiny toddles become 6-foot teenagers. Build your home with the future in mind, rather than only thinking about the present.

What colors and style define your family?

Much of your life will be spent in your new home, so make it an environment that will make you happy. Take time to think about your style as early in the process as possible. View our photo gallery for colors and styles that may spark your interest. Jot down adjectives you want your house to evoke, then choose colors you feel match those words, i.e. Calm – Blue, Clean – White. Trips to Sherwin Williams can provide color samples. Houzz and Pinterest are full of inspiration. Bottom line: always be on the lookout for ideas.
